Richmond Hill Liberty’s Under-23 cricket team emerged as the champions of the New York Cricket Academy’s U23 T20 Independence Cup. We revisit RHL U23’s journey beginning with our opening match of the tournament on Saturday, July 1, 2023 against MMZ/NYCA.

Following a solid-blowing performance to restrict MMZ/NYCA to 124, RHL was reeling at 54 for 7 when Raymond Ramrattan & Shiva Sankar teamed up for a 74-run rescue job to win the match.

The full Richmond Hill Liberty squad on the opening day of the tournament. In uniform from left to right: Kapeshwar Jagdeo, Surendra Ramcharitar(vc), Brandon Deonarine, Samuel Persaud, Shiva Sankar, Akash Sookram, Raymond Ramrattan, Varun Mangla, Kevin Shaw, Bhumeshwar Naraine, Tamesh Persaud (c), Brandon Pydana, Avinash Etwaroo, and Mahendra Parsaram.

MMZ/NYCA batted first and got off to a decent start with Ameer Singh scoring 18 runs. However, wickets fell at regular intervals, with Kapeshwar Jagdeo and Raymond Ramrattan doing the damage for Richmond Hill Liberty. Despite contributions from Talha Khan Momand (57) and Safeek Deonarine (17), MMZ/NYCA could only manage to post a total of 124 runs in their allotted 20 overs.

Kapeshwar Jagdeo and Raymond Ramrattan were the standout bowlers for Richmond Hill Liberty, striking early to claim 2 wickets each. Shiva Sankar and Tamesh Persaud also chipped in with 2 wickets each, restricting MMZ/NYCA’s scoring opportunities. The Richmond Hill Liberty bowlers bowled tightly, conceding only 9 wides.

In response, Richmond Hill Liberty faced some early hiccups with the loss of Alex Algoo and Surendra Ramcharitar. However, Raymond Ramrattan played a crucial knock of 50 runs, anchoring the innings. It appeared that he was going to be left stranded at the crease with the RHL inning reeling at 54 for 7 in the 9th over. However, the experience of West Indies youth player Shiva Sankar quickly came to the forefront. Sankar steadied the ship and along with Ramrattan, they partnered to safely see the win home.

Darius Gopaul and Safeek Deonarine were the most successful bowlers for MMZ/NYCA, picking up 2 wickets each. Despite their efforts, Richmond Hill Liberty managed to achieve the target with some resilient batting.

Richmond Hill Liberty’s victory was a result of disciplined bowling and determined batting, especially from Raymond Ramrattan, who was awarded the Player of the Match for his half-century.
