Liberty Sports Club suffered its first loss of the season when #TheBlueNation fell short by 39 runs to Big Apple Sports Club. Trevor Henry picked up 3 wickets when LSC restricted BASC to 221 after BASC was asked to bat. Francis Mendonca’s 52 and Terrence Madramootoo’s late inning 32 was not enough to get past the BASC total.
Danesh Deonarain won the toss and asked Zaheer Saffie’s men to take first strike. Domique Rikhi and Amarnauth Persaud added 32 before Henry removed Persaud (4) off his first ball of the match. Henry would strike again to remove the BASC skipper, Saffie (24) , in the 14th over when the score was on 74. D. Baksh became Henry’s third victim when he was removed for 4 off of superb return catch by Henry.
Rikhi rode his luck to 54 before Trinson Carmichael trapped him leg before wicket in the 19th over. Clain Williams soon followed, bowled by Leon Mohabir for 12. The fall of WIlliams’ wicket left BASC in a spot of bother at 114 for 5 in the 23rd over. Donwel Hector was still at the creas, however, and featured in two meaningful partnership to help the defending champions to a respectable total. Troy Dudnauth contributed 6 runs in a 39 partnership before Hector (54) and Adam Sanford contributed an additional 56.
When Sandford (26) was run out by Madramootoo with the score on 218 it signaled the end of the BASC inning. Shiv Ragubar (5) and Kevin Darlington (1) fell shortly after to leave Mark Gomes not out on naught when the inning came to an end at 221 in the 37th over.
Bowling for LSC Henry finished with 3 for 50 off 7 overs while Madramootoo and Carmichael picked up 2 wickets for 13 and 33 respectively. Andre Kirton bowled economically for 28 in his 8 overs picking up 1 wicket. Mohabir also finished with one wicket in his 5 overs.
LSC lost Romeno Deane early in the chase for 6. Francis Mendonca and Henry added 44 before a low, Sandford short ball trapped Henry leg bofore wicket. Sudesh Dhaniram would fall shortly after for 3. Trinson Carmicheal added 55 with Mendonca before Carmichael (20) was caught at backward square by Darlington.
Mendonca, who anchored the inning, stiking 6 fours during his stay would fall to Ragubar and change the momentum of the chase. Madramootoo looked intent on bringing home the win but could not find a partner to stay with him. Kirton (9), Deonarain (4) & Chaitnauth Khilawan had only breif stays at the crease to leave LSC at 155 for 8 in the 30th over. Earlier in the game Jay Singh suffered a game ending injury while fielding, meaning that LSC were essentially 155 for 9 at the fall of Khilawan’s wicket.
Mandramootoo struck some lusty blows with his last wicket partner Mohabir. The hard hitting right-hander’s cameo would come to an end with the score on 182 closing the LSC inning 39 runs short when the 9th wicket fell in the 35th over.
Darlington and Sandford picked up 3 wickets each while Ragubar 2 and Saffie 1 shared the remaining 3 LSC scalps.
LSC, with a record of 4-1 heads out east to take on 4-1, Atlantis Cricket Club-NY at Heckshire State Park this Sunday.
