Liberty Sports Club suffered its second consecutive defeat after losing a low scoring encounter with Big Apple Cricket Club on Sunday, June 26. Looking to bounce back following a 3 wicket defeat the previous week the men in blue stuttered in a chase of 144 at Bay Park.
Ornaldo Kirton was on song when LSC was asked to bowl first. His nephew, Rusty Kirton, got the club off to a superb start with the ball. He scalped two BACC batsmen in the first over of the match. Andy Mohammed (36) along with Cohan Ismond (26) and Keith Edie (15) strung together two small partnerships to bring some respectability back to the BACC inning.
Trinson Carmicahel entered the attack and removed Ismond then Orlando took over. He bowled Mohammed and then had Edie caught and bowl. Orlando would go on to take the next two more wickets with his leg spinners to finish off his 8 over spell with four victims and allowing just 25 runs.
Hemendra Ramdihal and Rusty picked up a wicket each to end the BACC inning at 144 inside 37 overs.
Looking a relative straightforward chase for #TheBlueNation, the highly motivated BACC boys were ready for the challenge. They found success early sending back LSC’s leading run scorer, Francis Mendonca, and his opening partner, Javed Shakoor, in the 3rd over of the match. Both of them going via the leg before wicket route. Three more quick LBW’s left the LSC chase in terrible trouble at 25 for 5 inside the 7th over.
Captain Danesh Deonarain, joined by the reliable Rusty started to stage a fightback. Runs was hard to come as the BACC bowlers kept the attack tight. The LSC pair took the score to 45 by the time the first water break came around in the 14th over.
The fight resumed after the break and Deonarain and Rusty saw the score to 72 before another LBW decision would remove Deonarain for 22. The 47 runs partnership had shored up the LSC’s chase but there were still just over half of the runs still to get. Dilly Khilawan joined Rusty and the duo took the score to 105 at the 2nd water break.
At the resumption after the break, however, trouble would strike when Rusty in an obvious break in concentration held out to a superb diving catch by Ismond at long on. With the key batsman gone for 36 the remaining three LSC wickets folded for just 8 more runs. The LSC inning ended in the 34th over with just 113 runs on the board. Eight of the ten wickets to fall required umpiring intervention along the LBW route.
Zahid Majeed was the most successful bowler for BACC with 4 wickets for 19 runs. There were two wickets each for Rayamul Islam and Mohammed while Eide and Rakash Goberdhan picked up one each.
