Vice-Captain, Altaaf Habibulla, bagged 5 wickets in a gritty all-round effort but it was not enough to prevent Phoenix Cricket Club from edging home in a low-scoring Sunday affair. Persistent rain on Saturday prevented play across the league on Saturday which meant split points against Melbourne NY Alliance.
ON SUNDAY vs Phoenix CC
Phoenix Cricket Club emerged victorious by 3 wickets in a closely contested match against Richmond Hill Liberty CC in the NYNCL Sunday Premier 40 Overs Competition. Phoenix CC won the toss and elected to bowl first to take advantage of the damp conditions from overnight rains.
Trevor Henry fell early, bowled by Hemendra Ramdihal for 4 runs. Latchman Bisram and Christopher Blucher tried to stabilize the innings, but their contributions of 13 and 17 runs respectively were not enough to build a strong total. Altaaf Habibulla top-scored with a patient 40 runs off 63 balls, including a boundary and a six. However, regular wickets hampered Richmond Hill Liberty’s progress, and they were bowled out for 128 runs in 35.5 overs. Gaurav Ramesh and Hemendra Ramdihal were the pick of the bowlers for Phoenix Cricket Club, taking three wickets each.
In response, Phoenix Cricket Club faced early setbacks with the dismissals of Chandrapaul Hemraj and Hemendra Ramdihal. However, Akshay Homraj (17) and Mahendra Persaud (60) steadied the innings with a crucial partnership. Anderson Mahase (24) also contributed valuable runs to keep the chase on track. Altaaf Habibulla starred with the ball for Richmond Hill Liberty, taking five wickets for 32 runs in his 6 overs. Samuel Raghubir and Leon Mohabir chipped in with a wicket each. In the end, Phoenix Cricket Club reached the target of 129 runs in 24.2 overs, winning the match by 3 wickets. Avi Dhanpaul’s quickfire knock of 20 runs off 13 balls ensured the victory for Phoenix Cricket Club.
It was a closely fought contest between the two teams, with both sides displaying competitive cricket. Altaaf Habibulla’s all-round performance for Richmond Hill Liberty CC couldn’t prevent Phoenix Cricket Club from securing the win. Phoenix Cricket Club’s bowlers, especially Gaurav Ramesh and Hemendra Ramdihal, set up the victory by restricting Richmond Hill Liberty to a modest total.
